Dear Mr. Appleby:
In February, you wrote an article about the Toronto Church of Scientology and their battle with an Oakville man, Mr. William G. ("Gregg") Hagglund.
We wish to call your attention to the Church's further intimidation efforts and their effect on Mr. Hagglund and his family. We believe your readers will find Scientology's un-churchlike behavior quite interesting, particularly in light of the Church's application to Revenue Canada for official recognition as a charitable organization.
We've included Mr. Hagglund's recent posting to the Usenet newsgroup alt.religion.scientology as enclosure (1) so you may read his description of the results of the Church's emotional terrorism. That his brother would cut off all contact with him for fear of the threatened consequences speaks volumes about Scientology's reputation in Canada.
Not successful in targeting Mr. Hagglund directly, the Church of Scientology has moved against his family. This inexcusable behavior is bad enough on its own but it is merely the latest in a series of calculated attempts to intimidate and silence Mr. Hagglund. It is in keeping with the Church scriptural doctrine of "Fair Game", which instructs members that enemies (defined as anyone critical of Scientology) "may be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed." (Hubbard Communications Office Policy Letter of 18 October 1967, Issue IV)
Nor is Mr. Hagglund's case an isolated incident. The Church of Scientology uses families for intimidation purposes whenever convenient. Mrs. Edith Ervin was [the] victim of similar attempt to force her into silence. She says, "What caused me to go onto the internet with my endeavors to expose this group [Scientology]? My two sons in Scientology visited me in Seattle this past summer to 'handle' me. They told me if I didn't stop picketing Scientology I wouldn't see them or my granddaughter again. I refused and when they returned to Albuquerque my younger son, Jeremy, closed his post office box with no forwarding address and my older son, Joel, sent letters back marked 'Refused, Return to Sender.'" You may read her complete story online at:

Ted Mayett has compiled a listing of the Church's recent harassment activities on a web site at:
<http:// www.solitarytrees.net/ pickets/ sp0000.htm>
Most of these incidents are minor but they amply illustrate a pattern of continuing misbehavior, despite all Church claims to the contrary.
Keshet has chosen to remain anonymous to avoid harassment.
We encourage you to write a follow-up to your original article about Mr. Hagglund to bring your readers up to date on the continuing controversial behavior of the Church of Scientology.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
