1. Where were you when Scientologists were exposing the slave camps in South Africa?

Presumably you are speaking of the private psychiatric camps established with cooperation of the apartheid regime wherein blacks were subjected to gross human rights abuses and hired out as slave labor. For ferreting out these camps and exposing these abuses, we sincerely thank the CCHR.

Now, the fact that the victims of these abuses happened to be black is really irrelevant, isn't it? CCHR's agenda is the destruction of psychiatry, not the support of human rights (except as it serves their purpose). How terribly convenient that anti-apartheid world opinion could be leveraged for CCHR's cause.

I have a couple follow-up questions for you, Mr. Roman:

  1. What led Mrs. Mkhize of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Mental Health Workshop panel (20-21 November 1997) to ask the CCHR representative who gave testimony, "Why are you not so popular… not only here, world wide? …you scare people off, why is that?"

  2. Where is Scientology's submission to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Faith Communities Hearing (17-19 November 1997)? Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Baha'is, Catholics, Protestants, African Traditional Religions and even the Dutch Reformed Church made their statements of contrition, victimization, or anti-apartheid activities. Where was the *Church* of Scientology?

5. What did you do to help the South African children to learn and have an education?

Tell me, Mr. Roman, what exactly did Scientology do?

Dear MR McClelland,

Re: Church of Scientology

Your fax ref. tm0506 dated 5 June 1991 regarding possible Church of Scientology school education in South Africa.

The matter has been taken up with the Department of Education and Culture as well as the Department of Education and Training who are responsible for school education in South Africa.

Both denied any knowledge of the Church's involvement in formal education in South Africa.

According to the Department of Education and Training, the Church of Scientology tried to use a front organization in 1989, the so called "Education Alive" but was not allowed to get involved in the Department's schools.

I am afraid their claim of teaching 1.5 million children in South Africa to read is just another fabrication.

Yours sincerely
Johan Klopper
