At approximately 6:30 EST this evening (Sat. Feb. 21), I received a long-distance phone call from an individual identifying himself as Mr. David Lee, a private investigator, who wished to ask me a few questions. When I asked who he represented, he said he was working on his own, although he later said he had been employed by the Church of Scientology in the past.
The supposed Mr. Lee proceeded to ask me about my postings to a.r.s. I replied that to my knowledge I had not participated in the specific discussions he was asking about, since I had no opinion about the subject matter.
Next, the alleged Mr. Lee asked me about the content of my Web page and what would prompt me to publish it. I explained to him that I was motivated by moral indignation, particularly over the following legal judgment, which I encouraged him to obtain and read:
Hill v. Church of Scientology of Toronto, [1995] 2 S.C.R. 1130.
Mr. Lee: If indeed you are who you say you are, may I humbly request that the next time you attempt to investigate me, you please give me a few days' notice? I have a number of friends who can't believe a Church would employ private investigators to question its critics. I would love to invite them over to hear for themselves. It would be an unprecedented social event for my own church group, to say the least.
It is possible that this phone conversation was actually a prank call instigated by someone who is not associated with Scientology in any way. If so, Mr. Prankster, please be advised that the Church of Scientology of Canada is currently applying for a charitable tax exemption. Your little joke might mitigate a legitimate application, if the authorities having jurisdiction were to believe it was a real attempt to intimidate a critic of the Church exercising his Constitutional right to free expression. I am sure you have no desire to interfere with, or be perceived as interfering with, the activities of a genuine non-profit organization going about its lawful business or seeking the tax status it is legally entitled to.
I would like to establish whether this exchange was indeed what it claimed to be. If any person reading alt.religion.scientology has information about a real PI named David Lee that I could use in this regard, please forward it to cj871@freenet.carleton.ca. The use of PGP encryption is invited; feel free to obtain and use my public key per the instructions in my .signature.
