Hate-survey, Clearwater, Police and a Newspaper.
Scientology-Survey distributed in front of Clearwater Police Department
Date: 18 Dec 1997
The following survey was handed out by four staff/Field Staff members of OSA Clearwater in front of the Clearwater Police Department on December, 8th:
"ARE YOU AWARE OF...
Instances of Abuse, Discrimination and Illegality Within The Clearwater Police Department?
Independent investigation by Freedom Magazine has continued to uncover previously unreported abuses among top brass at the Clearwater Police Department, including racism, involvement in secret intelligence operations and lack of investigation into reports of drug trafficking in the Clearwater area.
Officers in the rank and file are among the first to be affected when the reputation of the police is undermined by internal corruption at the top.
Sunshine is the only disinfectant to handle such abuses. Through the years, many whistle blowers have come to Freedom when there was nowhere else to turn. If you have information concerning the following questions, we want to hear from you.
To protect against reprisals, all responses, whether signed or sent anonymously, will be kept strictly confidential.
1. Are you aware of instances of discrimination within the police department on the basis of race, sex, creed or religious belief?
2. Do you know of any officer who has been denied promotion due to racial or sexual discrimination?
3. Have there been known instances of sexual harassment by the CWPD brass?
4. Do you have information regarding illegal intelligence activities being conducted in the community by the Clearwater Police?
5. Do you have evidence of the "Calzone" program or similar harassment programs still in operation?
6. Are you aware of secret slush funds within the department being used by Chief Sid Klein, Deputy Chief Paul Maser or others to pay for such programs?
7. Do you know of individuals or groups to have been targeted for select intelligence-type operations?
8. Are you aware of any other abuses or illegalities involving either Chief Klein or Captain Maser?
9. Instances of suspected drug smuggling have been reported by members of community, particularly those living near the Clearwater airport on Hercules and near the Marina. These reports have not been acted upon. Are you aware of any such reports being intentionally ignored or buried by the department?
10. Is there any evidence of kickbacks being received by top brass within the Department?
11. Discrepancies have been reported in the amount of drug seizures done by the department. Do you know of any instances in which drugs seized by the department have been resold for personal profit?
12. Are you aware on any Clearwater PD brass who are obviously living beyond their means?
13. Have you been blocked from doing your job by orders from top brass to generate a quantity of arrests for minor infractions such as speeding rather such major crimes such as burglary, assault, rape and murder?
14. Are rank and file officers forced to meet meaningless quotas rather than engaging in effective law enforcement?
15. Are there any other areas of abuse, discrimination or corruption among top brass which have gone unreported and are in need of investigation?

Scientology-Leaflet distribtued in front of Saint Petersburg-Times Office
Date: 18 Dec 1997
The following leaflet was handed out by OSA Staff/FSMs in front of the Clearwater Office of the Saint Petersburg Times on December 8th:
"JOURNALISM?
The St. Petersburg Times ran an article on December 7 which insinuated that was something odd with the deaths of a handful of people who died of natural or accidental causes over the last 17 years whose common denominator was that they were members of the Church of Scientology. We thought you should know what Scientologists had to say about this - after all, it's us who are being stigmatized because we have not attained physical immortality. These are excerpts from letters sent to the Times by Scientologists in the Tampa Bay area.
- ' How many members of the First Calvary Baptist Church have died
since 1980? Have you investigated how many spectators attending
Buccaneer games have died since 1980? Maybe we should outlaw
football.'
S.S.
- 'Scientologists die less often than non-Scientologists'. That's the
message I've received from reading your front-page article this
morning. If you could only find these few out of hundreds of
thousands of Scientologists who have come to Clearwater over the past
2 decades, I am impressed! Scientology works!
'I fully expect to see next Sunday's front-page to show all the
deaths (in detail) of every Baptist since 1980 OR a picture of Mayor
Garvey being beamed up by the next UFO that has supposedly landed in
Clearwater.
'Get a grip or change your name to the National Enquirer of
Clearwater.'
C.S.
- 'If it weren't for the fact that you are again attacking my religion
on spurious grounds, todays article in your paper regarding
Scientologists, our health and medical treatment would be humorous.
Scientologists are very health conscious, probably more so than the
average. As I have been a Scientologist for nearly 30 years, I know
of what I speak. I have always been particular about my health. I eat
well, take vitamins, exercise regularly, get yearly medical checkups,
and when needed, see a doctor for medical problems. My Scientology
friends do the same. Quite unremarkable.'
G.H
- 'There is no doubt some good and decent people work at the SP Times,
but someone or some group is ruining your paper. Is anyone down
there interested in finding out who they are?'
E.C.
- 'I am a mother of 4 children. I recently re-located my home and
business to Clearwater. I am interested in contributing to
Clearwater. I did not believe that my children would be subject to
the religious discrimination that I am experiencing and have seen you
perpetuating...By continuing your biased attacks you show that you do
not agree with the principles this country was founded on.'
C.B.
- 'The St. Petersburg Times is proving more that they are on a witch
hunt against the Church of Scientology and printing biased and
alarmist opinion and hearsay rather than fully substantiated facts
and research which give the full acount and background or 'a story'.
What the St. Pete Times is demonstrating is their very own personal
agenda and axe to grind against the Church of Scientology. The
venting of this through your polluted and dishonorable reporting is
utterly irresponsible to your readers and does the public a great
disservice. What crimes and misdemeanors are you covering up?'
D.M.
- 'Once again your newspaper has chosen to attack my religion. Lisa
McPherson was my friend and it's shameless what you have done to her
memory. The next time you're looking for 'facts' about her, why don't
you talk to someone who knew her as opposed to someone who's trying
to make a profit at her expense or forward an agenda, put your
newspaper at the top of the list.'
K.A.
- 'I would like to say for the record that I am happier, healthier and
more productive (because) of Scientology. I moved to this area
(because) of Scientology. I am extremely proud of the contributions
my church makes to communities throughout the world in addressing
problems such as illiteracy, criminality and drug abuse.'
R.H.
- 'As a medical doctor, who has treated thousands of Scientologists
over the past 20 years, I also know the theme and innuendo of your
article to be patently false. It is not uncommon for a parishoner
seeking church services to be requested to have a physical evaluation
by a physician of their own choosing prior to receiving church
services. Nor does the church seek to intervene in any subsequent
medical treatment.
'Also to suggest that random tragedies which have occured (and are)
associated with a given facility over a 20 year period are
necessarily related to the religious beliefs of those in that
facility is suspect science to put it mildly. You might consider a
similar story associated with the St. Pete Times. Your headline could
read 'For Some St. Pete Times Emplyees, Work has been Fatal.'
