Having crossed the deep dark jungles of Alabama, I arrived in Atlanta with
enough time to pick up Wynot and head for a late breakfast at a local 24-hour
diner. With refueling completed, we headed for…you guessed it….the Atlanta
Dianetics center for another 2 hour picket.
We parked in our usual spot, assembled our signs and strolled up the hill to
walk our beat. We noticed a police car on the way, and wondered if the clams
had called the police in some sort of pre-emptive strike. But then I noticed
the police going into the mexican restaurant, ignoring us completely. They
stayed there maybe 30 minutes, then left.
Something new at the Atlanta Dianetics Center is a bright orangy-yellow sign
with purple rails, proclaiming "Church of Scientology" across the top. This
sign looks kind of cheap, and that particular color is hard on the eyes. They
still had the "Now Hiring" sign in the window.
As far as signs go I had planned a blunt, no-punches-pulled, get-to-the-point
sign that said "Scientology is a SCAM!". The responce from this one sign
alone was so encouraging that I used it facing towards the traffic flow
almost all the time. I did however switch the other side occasionally from
among my collection of other signs
(http://www.wwisp.com/~madscience/atlpix.html).
During the two hours we picketed, the response from the passing public was
very supportive. I lost count of all the honks and thumbs-ups we got. One
passenger in a car applauded us as she passed. We only handed out ten flyer
packs, printed on really GREEN paper (Who is Xenu?, LRH quotes, and Judges on
Scn), due to the fact that most of the people already knew that scientology
was a cult.
We met a couple of ladies from Russia, now working in the states, that wanted
to know what a UFOCULT was. Very nice ladies. Good sense of humor.
Despite the fact that I was carrying my SCAM sign, and I had on my new "I AM
*NOT* A SCIENTOLOGIST" t-shirt on, one young lady still couldn’t tell that we
were picketing *against* the organisation. Now she will be looking up
www.xenu.net.
Now, understand that we picket across the street from the Borg, on the
sidewalk next to a parking lot. Next to this parking lot, there is a printing
company. During our picket, two people came out of there on different
occasions and asked why don’t we go picket in front of the scientology
building. My response was simple, Demographics. This side of the street
gets more foot traffic, and our signs are more visible to motorists. I gave
‘em the standard "this is a public sidewalk" speil, and one of them left with
a flyer packet.
The Scieno response during our picket? There wasn’t any. What was most
noticable about their reaction was the pains they went through to avoid
looking our way. Of the 6 or so people that popped out for lunch, two of
them looked our way.
So 2 hours of being at cause over a non-confront Borg. Good, that’s just the
way I like it. Leaves me free to talk to folks and hand out flyers.
